Imformation Minister Hasanul Haq Inu has said the media is not the opponent of democracy and the government is working to ensure a smooth journey of media alongside saving the democracy.
Minister Inu said these while addressing as chief guest the national conference on Mass Communication and Journalism held at the Senate Building of Dhaka University (DU).
The cabinet member said politicians can make mistakes but the media does not have the opportunity to make mistakes.
Inu said the media deserve the right to criticise any fault of the government but they cannot play their part like the villain.
Inu said the introduction of new laws, policies and legal frameworks for journalists will not affect their profession rather those will work as the safeguards of the watchdogs.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the conference titled ‘Mapping the terrain of Mass Media research in Bangladesh’ at the Senate Bhaban Auditorium.
Information adviser to the Prime Minister Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury delivered speech as special guest while Chief Information Commissioner Prof Dr Golam Rahman delivered the keynote paper in the conference.
Social Sciences Faculty Dean Prof Dr Farid Uddin Ahmed, Mass Communication and Journalism Department Chairman Prof Mofizur Rhaman and BFUJ President Manzurul Islam Bulbul were, among others, present at the programme.
