Govt ready to tackle Roanu fallout: Minister

Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya has said that the government has completed all necessary preparations to tackle the fallout of cyclone Roanu.

While speaking at a media briefing on Saturday noon, the minister said that around 500,000 people in the 14 coastal districts have been moved to safe shelters.

While asked about the 200,000 to 300,000 people who are yet to be evacuated, Maya said, “Those who live near the cyclone shelters naturally leave homes at the last moment.”

“We’ve already allotted TK. 400,000 and 2,000 tonnes of rice for each of the coastal districts,” said the minister.

The minister further said that around 100,000 disaster response personnel have been kept on stand by from the Ansar and VDP, Cyclone Preparedness Programme committees, Red Crescent Society and other agencies as well as the local Awami League activists.

Also speaking at the briefing, Disaster Management Secretary Md Shah Kamal stated that the administration chiefs of the coastal districts have placed a demand of 300 to 500 tonnes of rice and a cash assistance of TK. 1 million to 2 million each.
