Floods in north Nigeria claims 32 lives

LAGOS, Sept 22, 2018 (Xinhua) : The death toll from floods in Jigawa state of north Nigeria has risen to 32 after the state government registered 11 deaths on Friday.

Aminu Usman, the state commissioner for works and transport, told reporters in Dutse, the state capital that 11 people died between Tuesday and Friday in Auyo, Kaugama, Malam Madori and Kafinhausa areas of the state.

He said 14 local government areas of the state are affected by the
disaster, urging residents to take precautions against the floods.

Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes, Usman added. Livestock and other property, including 100 hectares of farmland, estimated at billions of naira were either washed away or submerged.

Heavy downpours have been hitting Nigeria since late July, triggering massive floods in some states.

Meteorologists said the heavy rainfall will continue in large parts of the country over the next few weeks.

In 2012, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that floods killed 363 people and displaced over 2.1 million others in 30 states.
