DHAKA, March 23, 2019 : Breaking around three decades’ deadlock, the Dhaka University Central students’ Union (DUCSU) today finally started its journey through a formal meeting.
It also took a decision in principal to nominate Prime minister Sheikh Hasina as a lifetime member of DUCSU.
The decision was proposed at a function held at DUCSU Bhaban where the newly-elected 25-mmeber executive body of DUCSU led by Vice President (VP) Nurul Haq Nur took charges with DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) and DUCSU President Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.
While talking about the decision, Prof Akhtaruzzaman said, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also a DU alumnus, encouraged and rendered assistance to hold the DUCSU poll. A proposal was placed to nominate her. We will take necessary measures to implement this proposal following DUCSU constitution.”
International Affairs Secretary of DUCSU Shahrima Tanjima Orni tabled the proposal at the meeting before it was raised by DUCSU General Secretary (GS) Golam Rabbani for further discussion.
However, the newly elected VP Nurul Haq Nur along with secretary to social service affairs Akhter Hossain opposed the proposal terming the DUCSU polls “questionable”.
While talking to the journalists after the executives meeting, DUCSU General Secretary (GS) Golam Rabbani said, “Most of our executive members raised their hands to nominate the premier as a lifetime member following a democratic way. We want to honour Sheikh Hasina with a blazing programme.”
The thirteen-member executive bodies of 18 residential hall unions also took charges today. Provosts of the halls chaired the meetings as the presidents of respective hall unions.
A total of 25 leaders of DUCSU and 234 hall union representatives were elected after a gap of 28 years. The last poll was held in 1990.
