A Khulna tribunal on Tuesday has sentenced nine people to life term imprisonment for killing a night guard in Koira upazila of the district back in 2007.
The convicts are Quamrul Gazi, 34, Julfiqar alias Faku, 28, Humayan Sana, 32, Salam alias Sakim Moral, 40, Baizid Sana, 37, Alamgir Sana, 32, Rustam Sana, 34, Habi Sana, 38 and Mafizul alias Mafi Sana, 38.
The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, if unpaid, will lead to one year more rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Abu Bakar Siddique alias Khokan Moral, haling from Aksara village in Asashuni upazila of Satkhira district, worked as a night guard at a fish farm at Sheora in the upazila.
The convicts used to steal fish from the enclosure.
Fearing that Khokan Moral might tell the enclosure owner about the theft, the convicts hacked the night guard to death with sharp weapons on February 18, 2007.
The night guard’s wife Gulnahar Bibi filed a case against unidentified people with Koira Police Station.
Investigating officer of the case, sub-inspector of Koira Police Station Mohammad Uddin arrested Salam alias Sakim in connection with the incident.
Later, Salam made his confessional statement disclosing the name of other killers before a court under section 164. Acting on his information, police arrested all the killers and submitted a chargesheet on May 31, 2007.
After examining all documents and 14 witnesses out of 22, Judge of Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal of Khulna SM Solaiman handed down the verdict.
